Week of June 20, 2008 NEWS Mow,
mow, mow, I guess it should be row, row, row, with all this rain! It is well needed, after last years dry summer, but it can
end any time now! Last Sunday, a waitress at a local restaurant said a couple people came in telling of the
storm they were caught in, north of Newberry, near Oswald's Bear Ranch, where hail covered the road and on the side of
the road it was thick slushy ice. Another storm had passed through earlier last week, in Newberry, which produced hail, also!
All the rain made for a nice harvest of morel mushroom hunters, this year! Especially in the
area where the Sleeper Lake Fire was last year, North of Newberry! The nice size morels, were plentiful, but the picking has
slowed and pretty much has ended for this season.
The rain
hasn't stopped, Neil Sauter,
age 25, who is walking, on stilts, over 800 miles across Michigan to speak at a school for children with neural
and motor disabilities. He is doing this walk to let people know about cerebral palsy and to raise money for the United Cerebal
Palsy of Michigan. In an email from Neil, he said "I have been caught in the rain a few times, but the
rain keeps me cool so I don't mind it too much."
He began his walk on May 5, 2008 in Lambertville in southern
Monroe County. He hopes to finish in Ironwood
by early July, which is at the west end of the Upper Peninsula.
Neil has mild cerebral palsey, which effects his
legs. He walks an average of 20 miles a day, starting at 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Neil was approximately two
miles East of Naubinway, heading
West on U.S.2, June 10, at 5:45 p.m., at that time it was raining with some thunder and lighting in Engadine.
Our prayers are with him on his journey and we hope he raises more then his goal for the United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan.

Gould City
has lost a very kind man, Chuck Marshall, who was a life long resident of the area. He passed away at the age of 88,
on June 14. Mr. Marshall, attended school in Gould City, where he received medals in track. He served in the U.S. Army during
WWII and was a member of the Boucha-Draves-Raski V.F.W. Post 8372 of Engadine. He worked 42 years as a heavy equipment operator
with the Mackinac County Road Commission and faithfully took care of his mother until she had passed. He enjoyed baseball,
in his younger years and was a member of the local league championship team in 1947. Chuck could always be seen taking a drive
South of Gould City, to Scotts Point, as you passed him on the road, he could always be seen with a smile on his
face and waving as you went by. He was a kind and gentle man, who will greatly missed!
Next time
you see Karen Hins, who grew up in Gould City and is the daughter of Ron and Betty Clark, and who still resides in our
local area, is to be commended for being such a wonderful and honest person. A little birdy told me, she had found a wallet,
on the road and returned it, fully intact to it's owner, who was very grateful. Karen is known for her kindness and we
are proud to have someone like her living in our area. Next time you see Karen give her a pat on the back (actually a hug),
she well deserves it!

younger, my grandparents went fishing with us, my grandpa grabbed the spray from my grandmas purse and told her it was
the worse bug spray he ever used, it seemed to attract the mosquitoes! My grandma said she didn't bring bug spray, then
laughed because he had used her hair spray instead!
