December 15, 2008, I had surgery for weight loss.

I began researching this two years ago and planned to have Bariatic Surgery done at least a year ago, but for personal reasons I decided to wait.
In the meantime I lost appx. 20 pounds, before surgery, I went into this feeling great and all my test results came back perfect! The doctor was happy with my attitude and health.

The day of surgery I was excited! I was the first patient of the day, I arrived at the hospital at 4:45 a.m. and had surgery appx. around 8 a.m. I wasn't in as long as expected, at a little over 2 hours in surgery, it made my recovery easier (so I've been told). The first day was alright, I wasn't in as much pain as expected. I actually slept a lot, that evening I got up and moved around, the next morning and day, I continued to feel better, I still had pain shots, just in case! My back and neck hurt, because I couldn't lay down flat, I had to sit up at a 50 degree angle, so my neck became very stiff!

I'm allergic to metals and zinc, which I make sure I tell all doctors/hospitals. I received fluids through and IV, on the second day they gave me something yellow, but I didn't think anything of it, until my right side began to feel itchy, I asked the nurse if there was something metal touching my back, when she looked, she said "You're all broke out in a rash", from there we talked about 10 minutes and figured it was the IV fluids, the yellow fluid was vitamins with zinc!!! Unfortunately the bag was almost gone, so I continued to break out all around my stomach, back, legs, arms, hands and fingers. Thank goodness I took my rings off and left them home, other wise I probably would have had to have my rings cut off!

To top this off, they brought me a cream from the pharmacy, I always read anything that I use and right on the container it said it contained zinc. I pointed this out to the nurse, I of coasre didnt' use it. I asked for the lotion that some hospitals give out, it took about 3 or 4 times of me asking for it, for them to finely bring me some and thank goodness it helped a little. They also brought me some liquid benadryl, which helped, but also made me more tired then I was before. It was hard staying awake while visiting with family.

That evening the doctor came in and was very happy with my outcome and said I could have went home that night (of the second day), but it was dark outside and I had over 2 hours to drive  home, so I stayed and was released the next day.

I was home by 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 17. I felt good, but still tired, I took my pain meds a couple times that day, again more because my neck was hurting so bad and sitting up sleeping was hard! I probably over did it that night, where I was restless, when I got up and walked around I also put wood in our woodstove. It was very hard bending over to pick up the wood, but managed, I did this at 4:30 a.m. and again at 7:30 a.m.
AND NO I shouldn't have picked up firewood!

Eating wasn't too bad, I had my mind set that my eating habits had to change!

On the second day home, I made a pot of chicken (boneless skinless chicken breast) with sauteed onions and green peppers, seasonings and a nice broth. I figured my family needed to eat too and I could eat the broth, it wasn't greasy at all and was a nice change to water.

I'm not able to take my vitamins, because they have zinc in them. Normally I would take the vitamins every other day or every three days. But because of the mistake in the hospital, I have too much zinc in me now, so I decided to wait to start taking them for a month. I take my Calicum pill which is chewable, I'm so dry that eating one makes my throat even dryer, so the first couple days, it took me all day to finish one.
Another thing that is a must have is GasX, I always keep a package with me, it helps with gas.

Below I have a list of some of the foods I've ate with results of how they effected me.
I also have my weight loss chart, with dates.

I actually went out December 26, to the Gould City Eagles, where we had a special guest playing with the band, who was from the Grand Ole Opry, I didn't want to miss this. My husband and I went, I couldn't sit down well, because one of my staples (stitches) would poke me and hurt. So I stood up. Our daughter in law surprised us, by coming down, too. The music was great and I love to dance, so I dance with another friend of ours, I didn't move much, I was a little worried about over doing it. BUT then a great polka song was played and I danced with our daughter in law, it was fun! I was a little out of breath afterwards, but at least I danced at only a few days after having surgery! Probably not recommended for most! But, again, I feel great and I'm healing quick!
I don't want set backs, so I need to remember I'm still healing!

Measuring Cups come in handy!
I like to keep track of how much I eat, along with what I eat.
I have a journal, I bought for two dollars!

Before I left the hospital they gave me appx. 1/4 cup of cream of wheat with splenda, along with a 1/8 cup of sugar free pudding. I took that with me and ate some of it on the way home. That made me feel better, after not eating or drinking anything for two days.

The first evening home I made some Campbell's Chicken Broth, I sipped on about 1/4 cup of this, slowly between 7:20 p.m. and 9 p.m., I drank a little water to washed down 10cc's of liquid pain meds.

I ate my calicum pill, slowly throughout the day.
I sipped on a little more of the Campbell's Chicken Broth and some water with crystal lite in it.
Around 6 p.m I made some chicken and broth with sauteed onions and green peppers with seasonings. The broth was very tasty and not greasy at all. I also made some boiled red potatoes and ate about 1/8 cup of this, thinned with the broth.

I made some Whey Protein, Chocolate Carmamel, which was tasty, I warmed it up a little  and sipped on about 1/2 cup of this around 9 p.m. I don't recommend heating the water or milk up before adding the Whey, it won't mix well, so be sure to mix it in cold water/milk first, then heat it a little.

I tried to drink some of the New Whey, grape, but it was terrible!! I won't buy that again!

Five days after surgery I tried a eggs over easy and ate the yolk, for protein. I like egg yolk, but it never did like me. But I needed the protein and was able to eat this with no problems (thank goodness!)
I cooked the egg with a spray of "Pam" in the pan. I also ate a very small pinch of toast.

I bought, in the frozen foods area of the grocery store, "Larry's Potatoes", it's an all-natural potato, microwavable, side dish of mashed potatoes with chives. Each small container is 180 calories, 8 grams of sugar, 3 grams of protein, total carbs 26 grams. I also bought "Heinz fat Free Gravy", classic chicken. This has 15 calories per 1/4 cup, total carbs is 3 grams, with 0% of sugar, protein, fat. I ate appx. 1/8 cup of the Larry's Potatoes thining it down with the Heinz gravy. This was very tasty! I did not eat the whole container of the potatoes, this lasted me two days!

I am also sipping on water throughout the day, I keep a container of water with me at all times!

Sugar Free Vanilla Pudding is good, it has 60 calories per the little containers they come in.

Lowfat Cottage Cheese is good, I like Lawry's Seasoning Salt on it.
1/2 cup of cottage cheese is 80 calories and has 14 grams of protein!!
Protein is a very good thing and I try to look for things that is low in fat and calories, but high in protein, like the Lowfat Cottage Cheese!

My husband was cooking sausage, on my 6th day home, at first it smelt a little good, but then I started feeling sick from the smell of it frying. I didn't throw up, but it was close! Before surgery I loved sausage on toast, but after this, I could care less if I smell it again!

On Sunday, December 21, I finely decided to sleep in our own bed, I laid down and fell fast asleep! What a great nites rest, finely! I did wake up a couple times, because it bothered me laying on my side, I had to prop myself up a little, but it was much better then sleeping in the recliner, half sitting up!

I found something good to drink, it took a little while finding it in the store, since our stores here are limited to supplies! But it was Ocean Spray Sugar Free Cranbury Juice. I have been sipping on this every day, I have bought three different flavors, I'm sure they make more, but this is all I've found.

I bought Campbell's Creamed of Chicken Soup, I took out the chicken and sipped on the broth, it was a very nice change. I drank about 1/2 cup within a hours time. I've also had Campbell's Potato Soup, without potatoes, they were a little hard, so I didn't think I should eat them, the broth was good thoe.

Cottage Cheese is also good, it's lowfat and I thinned it with a little 1% milk. Again eating only about 1/4 cup throughout about a 1/2 hour time.

I'm not much for icecream, but I bought vanilla ice cream, sugar free, which has 50 calories per 1/2 cup.
I ate 1/4 cup. It was good and a nice change.

I ate one piece of whole wheat toast with potted meat on it, no butter! It was 80 calories. And I chewed it up very good before swallowing! It took an hour to finish, I don't eat fast and I don't drink liquids anytime I'm eating food.

Hot cocoa, no sugar had 25 calories per package, it's tasty and the warmth of it felt good, on a cold winter day!

I found some "KAME Rice Crunch Crackers, cheese flavored". They are only 120 calories per 19 crackers, total fat is 1%, 0 sugar and 2 grams of protein.

Stouffers makes a Spinach Souffle, serving size is 1/2 cup which is 150 calories. There are three servings per container, 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of sugar. I ate about 1/4 cup with 8 crackers over an hour time.

I've also tried lowfat Ritz crackers, they're good, but a little higher in calories then the rice crackers.

Healthy Balance Apple Raspberry Juice is good, it has 6 grams of sugar, 6 carbs, and 30 calories. It's sweeter tasting then the Ocean Spray Juices.

I found an icecream sandwich, with No Sugar and Lowfat, it's another nice change, for a treat. I ate about 1/2 of a bar and gave the rest to my husband.

Kellogg's has a protein drink. I add it to cold water and it's great! It's called K2O and comes in a few different flavors. I have a container that holds 32 ounces, I clean the container everyday, then fill it with fresh water and add two of the dry packets, shake well and drink. I usually drink at least 32 to 64 ounces of this water a day. I love that it has PROTEIN in it and it TASTES great!!

Eating slow, chewing your food and not drinking liquids with foods is a must. Drink slow, small drinks, it's not easy sometimes, especally if your dry! But you'll learn it hurts if you drink to fast and too big of gulps!

People ask me if I get cravings, I haven't yet! But I have my mind set that this is going to work! I didn't go through the surgery for nothing! I'm on the road to good health, for myself and my family! I want to be around to see my grandchildren grow!

Shopping may take a little longer, as you read lables and look for foods that are good for you, low in sugar and calories and has protein!

Weight!!??
Well, this was something I would NEVER talk about, let alone tell someone how much I weigh. But now, I have a goal and I am losing weight and I'm proud of myself!
The most I weighed was 258. I hated it when my brothers would tease me saying I was 300 pounds, when I knew I wasn't, but I would never tell them what I weighed. Nothing is worse then being over weight and being teased, but I would laugh it off, not letting others see how it actually hurt me. I don't know why some people get a kick out of teasing others about their weight, some people try to lose weigh and can't, that was me. My back hurt so bad that it was hard to exercise and I'm not a pill person, so taking something for pain was out of the question.

Six months before surgery, I had to see my doctor every month, I finely took a low dose of a pain med and was able to get around better without back pain and I lost about 20 pounds. Which made my Bariatic doctor very happy!

The day before surgery, December 14, 2008, I weighed 247.
December 17, first day home from hospital I gained 11 pounds, putting me at 258, which was sad, but it was bloating from surgery.

If anyone has had this surgery and wants to talk, send me an email or contact me, I'm hear if you need anything! It can be a mental struggle sometimes and when you have someone to talk to it can help! Good Luck and remember you don't want to go back to the 'old' you, keep the weight off!! You can do it!
